Macclesfield is a small Adelaide Hills town on the upper reaches of the River Angas.

English banker George Davenport, a director of the South Australian Company, bought 1619 hectares in South Australia with partners Frederick Luck and Roger Cunliffe. His eldest son, Francis, arrived in Adelaide in February 1840 to choose the land, initially considering Port Lincoln before selecting a site along the River Angas — the last special survey in the area. The town was named after the Earl of Macclesfield, to whom George Davenport was steward in England.

The town's first hotel opened in 1841, with a brewery next door by 1851. Around 1903 the brewery became a butter and cheese factory, replaced by a new facility in 1937.
