Lobethal, settled in 1842 by Prussian immigrants, lies along a creek between hills, extending up the sides of the valley. Its name, meaning "valley of praise" in German, was changed to Tweedvale in 1917 during the Great War, honouring the town's main industry. The original name was restored on 12 December 1935 under the South Australia Nomenclature Act.

Once the hub of the Adelaide Hills wool processing industry, Lobethal"s mill buildings now house cottage and handcraft businesses. A brewery, established in 1850, operated for about 20 years before its founder turned to hop-growing, which became a key local crop. The former brewery became the Lobethal Tweed Factory, later the Onkaparinga Woollen Company, which ran until 1992. From 1894 to 1950, a cricket bat factory produced bats from locally grown willow.

Since the 1950s, Lobethal has been famous for its Christmas lights and decorations, drawing visitors from across South Australia.
