Crafers, in the Adelaide Hills, was named after David Crafer, who arrived in 1838 and established the Sawyers Arms inn in 1839. A year later, he built the Norfolk Arms on six hectares, with space for 150 guests. After selling it in 1842, the inn became known as The Crafers Inn. A new hotel was built in 1880s, but the original hotel building burnt down in 1926.

Crafers Primary School was established in 1865. It moved to its current site on Piccadilly Road in 1928, with the historic stone and brick building officially opened that year. Nearby, the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, opened in 1977, and features a stunning mix of native and exotic plants.

Crafers was long recognised as the Adelaide end of the South Eastern Freeway, until the Heysen Tunnels opened in 2000, finally linking the freeway through to Glen Osmond. Before the tunnels, the steep Eagle On The Hill route was notorious for serious truck crashes.
