Blackwood's name dates back to 1869 with the opening of the Blackwood Inn, later renamed the Belair Hotel in 1880. The Belair Post Office, opened in 1859, was renamed Blackwood in 1881 after the Belair Post Office was relocated. Although land grants began in 1840, major development didn't kick off until the railway reached the area. Blackwood Railway Station opened in 1883, boosting land subdivision and linking the town to both Adelaide and, eventually, Melbourne.

Notable landmarks include the Blackwood Soldiers' Memorial, unveiled in 1921 at the suburb's five-ways roundabout, and the Wittunga Botanic Garden, which was originally an English-style private garden established in 1901, now a public space.
