Aldgate is a village and suburb in the Adelaide Hills, known for its many local and state heritage-listed sites.
The area developed around the Aldgate Pump Hotel, opened in 1864 by London-born publican Richard D. Hawkins. A water pump outside the hotel, used by passing horse and bullock teams, gave both the hotel and the town their name, borrowed from Aldgate in London (which is derived from Old English "ealdgate", meaning old gate. A small settlement had formed by 1870.
The Adelaide–Wolseley railway line runs through the suburb. Aldgate station once served passengers on the Bridgewater line (1883–1987) and Mount Gambier railcars (until 1990). At its peak, the station had three platforms. The island platform was removed in the 1990s, while the side platform remains. The former station building now houses a community centre.
