Plympton is an inner south-western suburb of Adelaide, officially named in 1944. The name is thought to have come from Henry Mooringe Boswarva, who named a private subdivision after his hometown in Devon, England.

The suburb stretches across Marion Road, Cross Road and Anzac Highway. On the eastern side of Marion Road, its boundaries include the former Holdfast Bay railway line, Gray and Beckman Streets, and the Glenelg tram line. To the west, it's bordered by Mooringe Avenue, Streeters Road, Whelan Avenue and again, the tram line.

Remnants of the old Holdfast Bay rail line are now part of Plympton's West Side cycleway. The Plympton Post Office opened in 1856. A "plumpton" dog racing track was set up in 1896 by the Plympton Coursing Company, with the Adelaide Plumpton Coursing Club formed in 1908. The track and nearby polo grounds were later known as Birkalla after the local railway station, though the name Plympton Plumpton stuck around. Before World War 2, Birkalla also housed the Adelaide Hunt Club's kennels.
