Old Noarlunga, first settled around 1840, still holds its village charm despite surrounding suburban growth. Its name is thought to come from the Kaurna words nurlo (corner or bend) and ngga (place).

The town grew as a wheat farming centre, with a flour mill and river wharves established in 1843 to move goods down the Onkaparinga River to Port Noarlunga. A stone bridge over the river, still in use today, made the town a key point for travel along the coast.

By the 1860s, Old Noarlunga had a post office, churches, pubs, a council chamber, and several industries. It was also a favourite spot for cyclists and tourists heading to the southern beaches. Main South Road bypassed the town in 1972, and in 1978 the name "Old Noarlunga" was officially adopted.
