Aldinga Beach, located on the Main South Road heading towards the Fleurieu Peninsula, began as a farming settlement in the 1850s. It grew quickly with the opening of a hotel, church, blacksmith and shops. Although the 1870s saw a decline in population due to poor soil productivity and new land opportunities up north, the town endured thanks to its location along the Old Coach Road. The Aldinga Beach Post Office operated from around 1851 until 1992.

Before European settlement, the area was home to the Kaurna people. A camp known as Coortandillah existed in what is now Aldinga Beach, with Kaurna people living in the area into the 1870s. They were eventually relocated to the Poonindie mission. After their removal, some Ngarrindjeri people from the Goolwa region moved into the area. The Kaurna name for Aldinga Beach is Ngaltingga.

Aldinga Beach also has a small regional airfield, established in 1976 by a group of aviation enthusiasts wanting access to the McLaren Vale wine region. The airfield features four runways and has grown with strong community support, now including a paved runway and dedicated parking.
