Gatton, the premier town in the fertile Lockyer Valley, lies just off the Warrego Highway between Brisbane and Toowoomba. The town was first settled in the 1840s and initially grew to service the nearby cattle stations and as a changing point for the Royal Mail horses, however by the 1850s German immigrants had cleared most of the surrounding scrub and converted it into fields of vegetable and fruit crops which still dominate the local industry today. Numerous roadside fruit and vegetable stalls selling fresh produce feature throughout the area. Suitably located nearby is the University of QLD Agricultural College.
