Kakadu is a gazetted as a locality, covering the same area as the Kakadu National Park and is located within the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory.

The name Kakadu is liked to have originated from the mispronunciation of Gaagudju, which is the name of an Aboriginal language spoken in the northwestern part of the park. ¹ There are several indigenous nations listed as traditional owners of the area. These areas are leased by the traditional owners to the Director of National Parks to be managed as a national park.

The national park is a popular tourist attraction, known for its indigenous artefacts and rich indigenous heritage, bushland teeming with native wildlife and its distinct flora of over 1700 species of plants found within the area's boundaries.
