Nelligen is a small town located on the New South Wales south coast about 10 minutes from Batemans Bay. The town is nestled on the banks of the Clyde River and surrounded by state forests and national parks and offers picturesque and tranquil views. The town is a popular spot for caravanners and campers and well-renown in fishing circles. In the early 1850s gold was discovered at Araluen, Majors Creek, Captains Flat, Currowan Creek and Braidwood, as a result, Nelligen became a major stopping point and supply depot for thousands of miners heading to the goldfields.

The original inhabitants of the land were Aboriginal people of the Walbanga, Murrinjari and Bergalia clans. ¹ The Age, Nelligen, 8 February 2004.
