Kyogle, one of the most northerly centres in New South Wales, lies on the Summerland Way and against the Richmond River. The town's name is of Aboriginal origin meaning "place of the bush turkey".

Set in some of the most beautiful scenery in Australia, the town forms part of the Richmond Valley with the Border Ranges providing a stunning backdrop to the north, east and west.

The town was settled in the early 1900s but grew more substantially with the extension of the railway line from Casino, and is now the centre of the local dairying, beef and timber industries. While having a busy town centre with a substantial shopping precinct, nearby attractions include the Rainforest Botanic Gardens, the Border Ranges National Park (35 km north), Captain Cook lookout (2 km south) and Lake Harrison (1 km west).
