New South Wales is bordered by Queensland to the north, Victoria to the south, and South Australia to the west. Its coast borders the Tasman Sea to the east. The Australian Capital Territory is an enclave within the state and there is a small segment of the state's coastline south of Wollongong taken up by Jervis Bay Territory, which was initially intended for use as a port for the Australian Capital Territory.
The state capital of New South Wales is Sydney, which is also Australia's most populous city. New South Wales is also Australia's most populous state, with the majority of the population living along the eastern coastline.
New South Wales was founded with the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. The First Fleet was a fleet of 11 ships that transported British convicts, along with soldiers, crew, and families, to Australia in 1787-1788 to establish a penal colony.
