General Information:
Signals that were installed in the Australian Capital Territory prior to the 1980s utilised incandescent bulbs to provide a signal to drivers. During the 1970s in the ACT, target boards were introduced to improve the visibility of signals to approaching vehicles. These target boards were all black with no white border around edge, unlike those used in surrounding New South Wales.
The first sets of traffic signals went into operation at the junctions of Northbourne Avenue & London Circuit and Northbourne Avenue, Boldrewood Street (now Barry Drive) & Cooyong Street in Civic, on 23rd October 1965. 1 2
This page concentrates on signals and related equipment released prior to 1980 and used within the ACT. All the signals on this page have been replaced with modern equipment.
