General Information:
Southern Cross Way started life in the 1980s as part of the Gateway Arterial Road (SR20). as the road was developed, the SR20 route number was replaced with NR1, then Metroad 1 and then M1 with the introduction of alphanumeric route numbering.
Originally a number of locations where the route crossed other roads, the junction were controlled by roundabouts before eventually being replaced by grade-separated interchanges and the route slowly being transformed from Super-2 undivided arterial road to motorway standard.
The route passes by commercial, residential and industrial areas and still serves as an important road in the Brisbane road network. Before being named Southern Cross Way, the route was named Old Gateway Mwy.
History:
- June 1980: The Gateway Bridge Company was established to oversee construction of the Gateway Bridge and, following construction, to maintain the bridge and collect tolls. 3
- August 1980 Work began on the six-lane Gateway Bridge over Brisbane River. 2
- December 1985: The Gateway Bridge and motorway approaches were completed.
- 1986: The Gateway Arterial was constructed in two stages and was completed.
- 11 January 1986: The original Gateway Bridge was officially opened. 4 Around 200,000 people attended the opening festivities and walked the new bridge.
- 26 July 1989: Airport Drive to Cannery Drain duplication opened by Minister for Main Roads Bill Gunn. 5
- July 1990: Airport Drive overpass opened. 5
- 19 September 1991: Cannery Drain to Bicentennial Road duplication opened by Minister for Transport David Hamill. 5
- 03 December 1992: Bicentennial Road to Deagon Deviation duplication opened by Federal Minister for Transport Bob Brown. 5
- 12 February 1993: Bicentennial Road overpass opened by Minister for Transport David Hamill. 5
- 9 March 2007: Work starts on second Gateway Bridge over Brisbane River. 6
- July 2009: Upgraded Gateway Motorway north of Gateway Bridge opened to traffic. 7
- 2010: A 7 km stretch of the Gateway Motorway that runs between Eagle Farm and Nudgee Road at Banyo, renamed Southern Cross Way after realignment of Gateway Motorway. 8
- June 2010: Demolition of the old Gateway Motorway Overpass (now Southern Cross Way) over Airport Drive in preparation of new overpass. 9
