General Information:

State Route 124 is a major arterial route in the Newcastle area, in the New South Wales Hunter Valley. It's mostly dual carriageway arterial road standard. The route services industrial and waterfront areas in the Newcastle and Mayfield area.

State Route 121, for 1.5 km, Mayfield.

November 1988: Completion of the upgrade to dual carriageways through Tighes Hill, Maryville and Wickham. ²

December 2000: State Route 124 extended to follow Stewart Avenue. Prior to this, Hannell Street continued south-east to cross the railway line on the east side of Wickham Railway Station and then the route would turn west onto Hunter Street to terminate at the same intersection it does today. The Hannell Street railway crossing was closed upon opening of the Stewart Avenue Extension. ²

1967: Completion of bridge over Port Waratah Railway line at Tighes Hill and Mayfield East. This replaced a timber structure built in 1907. ²

24 July 2000: Stewart Avenue extension / level crossing elimination opened to traffic. ⁴

09 October 2000: Stewart Avenue extension / level crossing elimination fully completed and opened by State MP for Newcastle Bryce Gaudry. ⁴

2013: State Route 124 decommissioned and replaced by A43 with the introduction of alphanumeric route numbering.
