General Information:

Located in inner North Canberra, Mouat Street is named after Harry Playfair Mouat (1880-1952), who was one of the early surveyors in the Australian Capital Territory involved in the survey of the southwest boundary and city area. On 7th October 1913, Harry Playfair Mouat began surveying southward from Mt Coree along the ranges dividing the Cotter and Goodradigbee catchments. In many places he had to use steel pipes or spikes as border markers due to the rocky terrain. He finished his work at Corner R87 on 22nd April 1915. ¹

The route alternates between divided and undivided with 2 lanes in each direction, except between Northbourne Av (A23) and Brigalow St, where the road is mostly single lane westbound and 2 lanes eastbound. Mouat St forms part of the former Barton Highway alignment. Barton Highway was relocated to its present alignment during the 1970s. ²

1970s: Barton Highway route moved from what is now Ellenborough Street and Mouat Street to current alignment (which was once called Dunsmore Street) ³

22 July 1974: The Department of the Capital Territory modified the traffic lights at the intersection of Northbourne Avenue, Antill Street and the Barton Highway (now Mouat Street) by installing arrow signals. ⁴

26 July 1974: Arrow signals switched on for traffic turning into Northbourne Avenue from the Barton Highway (now Mouat Street) and Antill Street, bringing the lights into line with most others on Northbourne Avenue. ⁴
