General Information:

Gundaroo Drive is an arterial road linking Gungahlin town centre with the Belconnen town centre. it's has evolved from mix of divided and undivided road, and originally a single carriageway road and is one of the oldest roads through the Gungahlin area, originally starting life as Gundaroo Road before the area was converted from farmland to suburbia.

Between Baldwin Dr and Nudurr Dr, and also between Gungahlin Dr and Mirrabei Dr, the route parallels Ginniderra Creek which provides water for the 2 man-made lakes in Gungahlin (Gungahlin and Yerrabi Ponds) and also the man-made lake (Lake Ginninderra) in Belconnen town centre.

History:

April 1987: Construction begins on a roundabout at the Barton Hwy / Gundaroo Rd / William Slim Dr intersection. 1
August 1990: Approval given to retain Gundaroo Road for access to the then new Gungahlin area, as an extension to William Slim Drive. 2
March 1991: Plans released showing realignment of Gundaroo Road and renaming to Gundaroo Drive as devlopment of the Gungahlin town centre begins. 3
March 2016: Work commences on duplicating Gundaroo Drive between Mirrabei Drive and Gungahlin Drive. 4
October 2018: Completion of duplication of Gundaroo Drive between Mirrabei Drive and Gungahlin Drive, including relocation of utilities and landscaping. 4
May 2018: Work commences on duplicating Gundaroo Drive between Gungahlin Drive and Barton Highway.
3 June 2019: Four lanes opened to traffic between Nudurr Drive and the Barton Highway. 5
November 2015: Work commences on signalising the Barton Hwy / Gundaroo Dr / William Slim Dr roundabout. Works also included partial bus lanes and cycle lanes. 6
9 November 2015: Work commenced on upgrades to roundabout at the junction of William Slim Dr, Barton Hwy and Gundaroo Dr to increase capacity and to add signals to the roundabout. 7
December 2016: Completion of signalisation works at the Barton Hwy / Gundaroo Dr intersection. 6
20 December 2016: Traffic signals at the William Slim Dr (now Gundaroo Dr), Barton Hwy & Gundaroo Dr intersection switched on. 8
April 2017: The $10 million upgrade of the Barton Highway / Gundaroo Drive intersection is finished, following the opening of an additional lane on the approach from Giralang. 9
May 2022: William Slim Dr road name between Ginninderra Dr and Barton Hwy renamed to Gundaroo Dr.
