General Information:
Fairbairn Avenue provides access to several attractions including Australian War Memorial, Mount Pleasant Lookout, Duntroon Military College, Anzac Parade and Mount Ainslie Lookout. The road forms part of a larger network of arterial roads in the North Canberra district.
Much of the route is of a high standard, with pavement configurations such as divided carriageways (2 & 4 lanes) and also single carriageway roadway.
Fairbairn Avenue is named after James Valentine Fairbairn, who was killed in air crash at Canberra when he was the Minister for Air and Civil Aviation, 1940. 1
History:
- 8 February 1968: Gazettal of the name Fairbairn Avenue. 1
- 12 November 2002: Construction commences on the roundabout at the junction of Anzac Parade, Limestone Avenue and Fairbairn Avenue. 2
- 17 April 2003: Completion of the construction of the roundabout at the junction of Anzac Parade, Limestone Avenue and Fairbairn Avenue. 2
